For Immediate Release

LOS ANGELES – Today, LAUSD School Board Member Ref Rodriguez announced his endorsement of Kelly Gonez’s campaign to represent Board District 6. The announcement comes just weeks after Kelly announced her candidacy for the seat. Board member Rodriguez has represented the fifth Board District since 2015.

“Kelly is an experienced and dedicated public school teacher, who knows what needs to be done to improve learning,” said Dr. Ref Rodriguez. “She has led nation-wide efforts to support our most vulnerable student populations, including English language learners. This depth of experience makes her uniquely qualified to represent Board District 6.”

Born and raised in the Northeast San Fernando Valley, Kelly Gonez announced her candidacy to represent the Board District 6 last month. Since then, she has begun building a coalition of support from parents, teachers, and neighbors throughout the district. Current Board Member Mónica Ratliff has announced she is not running for reelection.

“I am proud to receive Dr. Rodriguez’s endorsement. We share a common vision of an LAUSD that provides every child with an excellent education that will prepare them for college and career,” said Kelly. “I look forward working side-by-side to transform our school system so it works for all families.”

Kelly Gonez grew up in an immigrant family in the neighborhood of Mission Hills in the Northeast San Fernando Valley. After graduating from UC Berkeley, she returned to her community to teach 6th grade science at PUC Lakeview Charter Academy in Lake View Terrace. In 2014, Kelly was appointed by President Obama to serve as an education policy advisor in his Administration. She secured over $50 million in additional education funding while leading the Obama Administration’s advocacy to increase education funding and support for special populations, including English language learners and immigrant students. Kelly lives in Sylmar with her husband, Manuel. She teaches 7th grade science at a STEM-focused charter middle sc shool in LAUSD.
